Monemvasia, Greece

Monemvasia is divided in two sections: the lower town and the upper town. The lower town is entered through the only gate on the south side. Wander the picturesque lanes to the main square, where a Turkish cannon stands near the Elkomenos church. The seawall covers the east side of the town with its protective gun embrasure. In the upper town, hike to the top of the 985-foot-high rock to see the walls of the old castle, the church of Hagia Sofia and a great view of the lower town.
