Kompong Som, Cambodia
Formerly known as Sihanoukville, Kompon Som is the principal deep water port of southern Cambodia, situated on a peninsula of the Gulf of Thailand. The port is gateway to Cambodia's capital of Phnom Penh. Visitors to this city are enchanted by its French Colonial charm. The National Museum displays an impressive collection of ancient Khmer crafts and other local items. The Silver Pagoda, one of the city's most treasured monuments, also displays artifacts from the Khmer culture. Other temples, known as “wats,” include Wat Ounalom, Wat Phnom and Wat Lang Ka. In addition to these religious monuments are the unforgettable Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a memorial was built in 1988 for the more than 17,000 people who died here.
